Dishwashers are among the most frequently repaired appliances - drain pumps, door latches, control boards and leaks are common failures. The good news is that a $500 cap covers most dishwasher repairs; the bigger question is how a plan handles your whole kitchen. This guide compares dishwasher and appliance coverage across the seven companies we track.

Our picks for dishwasher and kitchen appliance coverage
1. Choice Home Warranty - best value
Choice's entry-level Basic plan covers kitchen appliances, including the dishwasher, with a reported $3,000 per-item cap - generous for a dishwasher. If you also want the refrigerator, washer and dryer covered, you'll need the Total plan. Read the exclusions carefully: Choice agreed to an $11.8 million consent judgment with the Arizona Attorney General in 2026 over claim-handling allegations, without admitting wrongdoing. Read the Choice review.
2. American Home Shield - best for higher-end kitchens
ShieldGold covers appliances up to a reported $2,000 each, and ShieldPlatinum up to $4,000 - helpful if you have higher-end appliances where replacements cost more. Read the AHS review.
3. 2-10 Simply Kitchen - for kitchen-only coverage
2-10's Simply Kitchen plan focuses on kitchen appliances at a low price. Its reported $500 dishwasher cap covers most dishwasher repairs, and a Luxury Package raises caps to $5,000 for premium appliances. Read the 2-10 review.
Also consider
- First American - high appliance limits on upper tiers and an Appliance Plus upgrade to $7,000, but racks, baskets and rollers aren't covered.
- Select Bronze Care - an appliance-only plan at a low price; about $500 per item and depreciated-value replacements.
What dishwasher coverage includes - and excludes
Usually covered
- Built-in dishwashers that fail from normal use
- Mechanical and electrical components: pumps, motors, control boards, timers, door latches, heating elements, valves
- Leaks from covered components
Commonly excluded
- Racks, baskets and rollers (First American lists them as not covered; 2-10 has covered racks only under an optional upgrade in older contracts)
- Cosmetic parts - panels, handles, knobs, trim
- Portable or countertop dishwashers
- Water damage to floors or cabinets from a leak (a homeowners insurance question)
- Failures from misuse, improper installation or clogs from food debris, depending on the contract
Repair vs replacement
Most contracts repair before they replace, and replacements are usually of "similar features, capacity and efficiency" - not necessarily the same brand. Some companies may offer cash instead, often at their own cost, which can be less than retail.
Is a home warranty worth it for a dishwasher?
For a dishwasher alone, usually not. A typical repair costs a few hundred dollars, and replacement - including installation - commonly runs roughly $400-$1,500 (HomeAdvisor reports an average around $1,200 for replacement and installation; Fixr reports $400-$1,500 total). After the service fee, a single dishwasher claim saves relatively little.
The math changes when you count the whole kitchen. If your refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave and disposal are all several years old, one plan covering all of them - plus laundry on most combination plans - is more likely to pay off over a year or two than separate extended warranties.
A worked example
Your 8-year-old dishwasher's drain pump fails ($350 repair) and later that year your refrigerator's compressor fails ($900). With a $45/month plan ($540 a year) and a $100 service fee:
- With caps of $2,000-$3,000: the plan pays both repairs. You pay $540 + $200 in fees = $740, versus $1,250 without coverage.
- With $500 caps: the plan pays $350 + $500. You pay $540 + $200 + $400 over the cap = $1,140 - barely better than no plan.
How to avoid a denied dishwasher claim
- Clean the filter and spray arms regularly; clogs from debris can be treated as maintenance issues.
- Check the basics before filing - power, the breaker, the water supply valve and the door latch.
- Stop using a leaking dishwasher and turn off its water supply; water damage to floors and cabinets isn't covered.
- Photograph the model and serial plate (usually on the door edge or tub frame).
- Use the manufacturer warranty first if the dishwasher is new.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the per-appliance cap - and is the dishwasher cap different from other appliances?
- Are racks, baskets and rollers covered?
- Does the plan replace with a similar model or pay cash - and how is cash calculated?
- Which other kitchen and laundry appliances are included on this tier?
Do home warranties cover dishwasher racks?
Usually not. Racks, baskets and rollers are commonly excluded - First American lists them as not covered, and 2-10 covered racks only under an optional upgrade in older contracts. Check your contract's appliance section for "racks," "baskets" and "rollers."
Will a home warranty replace my dishwasher with the same brand?
Not necessarily. Most contracts promise a replacement of similar features, capacity and efficiency, not the same brand or model, and many allow the company to pay cash instead. If you have a premium brand, check the appliance cap and the replacement language.
How we compared dishwasher coverage
We compared each company's published coverage pages, sample contracts and third-party reviews as of October 2026; where sources disagree (for example on AHS's appliance caps), we say so.
